slow steady progress

Amidst the excitement surrounding the success of GB teams at the Olympics, and particularly the success of the GB Rowing and Cycling teams, it’s worth reminding yourself (or learning) that these successes are on the back of many years (decades in fact) of sustained effort and focus on performance improvement and innovation. As we all know Rome wasn’t built in a day and every 1000 mile journey starts with a single step etc etc and in the case of these sports this is exactly true. Both steps started with a few individuals, an attitude and a plan. As Margaret Mead the cultural anthropologist stated ‘A small group of thoughtful people could change the world. Indeed it’s the only thing that ever has’. Trace back the history of the current GB Rowing and Cycling and you’ll find this to true. So if you want to create a legacy or be part of one, then think big but expect it to be a long term effort and not an overnight fix. Patience and persistence are just as important as the more talked about vision and ambition.
